Research 101 Guide

Asking Focused Questions

One of the first steps in the research process is to form a focused question. Not only does question-forming force you to carefully measure if your research question aligns with your goals and objectives, but the search for evidence becomes easier with a formed question. A formed research question provides you with a clear path forward, in terms of information retrieval and critical appraisal (e.g PICO)

Evidence-Based Practice

Patient/Population/Problem
How would you describe your patient (i.e. known symptoms; medical history; social history; medications, etc?)
Intervention
What is the main intervention that you are considering for your patient?
Comparison
What alternative intervention are you considering for your patient?
Outcome
What is the best outcome for the patient (i.e. accomplish, measure, improve or affect)?
