Research 101 Guide

Citing Sources

According to the RVU handbook, plagiarism is defined as "the adoption or reproduction of ideas, words or statements of another person as one’s own without proper acknowledgment". When plagiarism does occur, more often than not, it was unintentional. Always double check that quotation marks are included for every quote and citations are properly formatted according to citation guidelines.

Cite when:

  • you are copying exact words
  • you are paraphrasing
  • you are using summaries
  • you are using multimedia resources
  • you are using websites
  • you are using any idea that is not your own
  • you are using using statistics or numbers

Do not Cite when:

  • you are using your own ideas
  • you are using common knowledge (e.g. the earth is round and rotates on an axis)
